Our Work with the Common Core State Standards
The College Board has been a strong advocate for and played an active role in the development of the Common Core State Standards. As part of this collaboration, the College Board helped draft the standards and helped shape the initiative by providing executive guidance on the Common Core Advisory Committee. The goal of the Common Core State Standards — to establish a common set of rigorous expectations to prepare students for college and career readiness — strongly reflects the guiding missions and values of the College Board, as well as of our programs and services.
As districts and states build their Common Core implementation plans, Standards and Curriculum Alignment Services (SCAS) can provide content expertise and technical support in the areas of:
- Alignment of the Common Core State Standards to current state standards, assessments and district curriculum
- Common Core transition and implementation plan development

Next Generation Science Standards
The College Board is also equally committed to the development of the Next Generation Science Standards . Once developed, the College Board can offer alignment and implementation guidance in this area. The Next Generation Science Standards will be designed using the new science framework developed by the National Research Council (NRC). There is very close alignment between the structure of the new science framework and the Science College Board Standards for College Success (SCBSCS), given their shared emphasis on big ideas, science practices, and the integration of concepts, skills, and practices within the standards. The SCBSCS can assist states and districts in preparing for the Next Generation Science Standards.
College Board Standards for College Success
The College Board Standards for College Success (CBSCS) define the knowledge and skills students need to develop and master in English language arts, mathematics and statistics, and science in order to be college and career ready.
The CBSCS outline a clear and coherent pathway to Advanced Placement® (AP®) and college readiness with the goal of increasing the number and diversity of students who are prepared not only to enroll in college, but to succeed in college and 21st-century careers.
The College Board also uses the CBSCS to align our own assessment programs and curriculum, including SpringBoard® and CollegeEd®, to college readiness.
States, districts, schools and teachers use the CBSCS in addition to the Common Core State Standards to vertically align curriculum, instruction, assessment and professional development to AP and college- and career-readiness.
Request free copies of the CBSCS for English Language Arts, Mathematics and Statistics, and Science or download from our webpage.
Please note the CBSCS for Mathematics and Statistics Adapted and Integrated Curricula and Three- Year Alternative for Middle School are only available as PDFs.
